New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors from the post-war period.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key platform, did not confirm his residency plans promptly following his triumph in November.
"My choice rested on keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda voters supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its diverse immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: thank you for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live there, Astoria will always live a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
During his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.
However his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit although he came from a famous family.
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it should be a space for civic gatherings, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his humble Astoria digs.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Inside, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what people claim," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers see such units as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
