What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives perished and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the events before the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
