The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a young woman harboring several personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, each with their own anxieties and drives. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, while other scenes show the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The core mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their heads are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
