The co-founders behind the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed how parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he plans to independently develop this new flavor as part of an individual series showcasing issues the company has been barred from speaking out about.
This latest announcement escalates the ongoing disagreement between the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders maintain that Unilever and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The entrepreneur announced via an Instagram video how he is creating a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen commented from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, that mirror those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new product line will be created through Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand which originally established in 2016 to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Mr. Cohen stated that he will develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.
This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's in September, after many years with the organization, citing concerns that the company's autonomy had been compromised following corporate moves to curb its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen commented that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence so that the company can achieve the social mission, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
