The Gunners' Boss Concedes Future Tenure Depends on Securing Major Honors.

As he approaches his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his continued role with the club is directly connected to delivering trophies.

Reflecting on: Six Years in Charge

The former Arsenal captain took over on the 20th of December in 2019 and managed to steer the team to an FA Cup victory a short time later. But, that first major trophy remains his only top-tier trophy after taking over from Unai Emery.

“Yes,” he stated when questioned about his future past 2027. “But it’s about today. And a lot of things need to fall into place in the next few months as well to earn the right.”

He will mark the six-year milestone with a game facing Everton, the very same club Arsenal met immediately following his hiring was confirmed.

League Position and Pressure

As trailing Manchester City playing against West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal could be displaced top spot in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This situation arises despite Arteta managing a squad that has suffered more than a century of fitness issues from the beginning of last season.

He is tied down by a year and a half left on the deal he signed in 2024, however, he knows that success is required in the immediate future.

Earning the Right

Arteta elaborated, highlighting the constant necessity to prove his worth. “I think a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you communicate, how you go into the dressing room, the signal you send.”

Arteta continued, praising the consistent faith from the hierarchy, while singling out the squad's dedication as paramount. “Ultimately, the key individuals are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, willingness to improve and give their all to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The squad faces the weekend fixture managing an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a hamstring injury that is anticipated to see him miss action for a few weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Regardless of the fitness woes and the immense scrutiny, Arteta feels the club's “priorities and messaging” are profoundly distinct from when he initially took over.

The manager referenced the team's performances as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Consider the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the standard we operate at.”

Arteta concluded, “That is a level that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And we want to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
