The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Clarifies Its Application of Generative AI for Upcoming Divinity

The studio behind hit RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just teased its upcoming project, generating significant excitement within the player base. However, follow-up statements from the company's lead designer have brought nuance to the discussion, addressing the studio's approach toward AI tools.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a recent message, Swen Vincke explained that the team is utilizing generative AI for particular preliminary tasks. These include developing PowerPoint slides, generating early-stage artistic references, and drafting draft dialogue.

Importantly, Vincke stressed that the end assets in the game will be authored solely by actual creatives. "Our team is writing everything ourselves," he affirmed.

"At Larian, we employ these tools to research ideas, in the same way we use the internet and art books," he stated. "In the conceptual brainstorming phase we use it as a rough outline for layout which we then substitute with original illustrations."

He added, "We've hired talent for their unique talent, not for their ability to follow what a AI generates."

Three Pillars of Practical Application

Vincke had previously detailed the company's targeted method to machine learning, categorizing its use into three main pillars:

  • Streamlining Repetitive Work: This includes polishing mocap data, audio processing, and pipeline-specific tasks like adapting animations for different models.
  • Accelerated Iteration: Using systems to rapidly prototype simple models of scenarios to validate concepts prior to complete development.
  • Long-Term Aspirations: Researching how AI could in the future facilitate new forms of gameplay, specifically in simulating unforeseen permutations in a complex RPG.

He specifically stated that central narrative domains — including writing — are not areas where the studio is reducing artistic input. Conversely, Larian is expanding its staff in these exact roles.

"Our studio is not launching a game with machine-made assets, nor considering cutting teams to swap them out with AI," Vincke summarized.
