New Year Partygoers Urged to Bundle Up with Snowfall Predicted Across the UK

Meteorologists are reporting an icy beginning to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Revelers are being urged to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Continue Amid Alerts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are planned to take place, following last year's cancellation. This comes despite advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," stated the national forecaster.

Displays Under Open but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks displays, with dry conditions and good visibility. The mercury are due to be cold, so warm wraps essential, as per forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on the transport network.

The Mercury Set to Fall Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to drop further as snowfall and high winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Advisories Activated

At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this signified the weather could to cause major effects across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.

The message for all is clear: to see the new year in good health, preparing for winter conditions is absolutely essential.
