More than 50 Minor Asylum Seekers Still Missing After Vanishing from State Care in Britain

The second and third largest ethnic groups to have vanished from each location are individuals from Afghanistan subsequently Iranians.

These children should be participating in activities in the park and preparing for their exams, not working for trafficking gangs in circumstances we know involve being chained to furniture, abused and mistreated, and punished by being starved of food."

Legal Changes and Ongoing Concerns

In December 2023, after a long-running judicial process concerning unaccompanied minor refugees vanishing from all temporary accommodations, the practice of regularly housing children in hotels was deemed improper.

Instead, agencies pledged to increase protection for these children by extending the use of reception centres. Since that court ruling another 44 children have gone missing from these centres, with 10 remaining unaccounted for and 34 located.

"When a minor does vanish, the risk that they are being exploited rises substantially and they are undoubtedly more vulnerable to abuse and smuggling."

Studies over a long period shows just how significantly more vulnerable unaccompanied children are as they are cut off from familiar surroundings, families, friends and communities and might have been exploited to Britain, mistreated while journeying, or trafficked after arrival.

Government Comments

An official representative commented: "Every minor or teenager missing from care is a major worry and we take each necessary step to protect them."

"Solitary refugee minors are vulnerable to being trafficked and exploited due to their isolation from loved ones and circumstances of their trips to the UK."

The representative said that skilled child protection staff assessed the children's risk of being mistreated with protective measures employed in collaboration with other agencies, such as police and concerned offices.

Authorities also guide children to processes and support networks to help manage the risk of exploitation in the UK, including the national referral mechanism and the specialized protection program. "Despite this it is challenging to prevent each youth from disappearing."

A separate representative stated: "The security and care of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children remains a priority, and we take children vanishing with great concern. We continue to periodically examine our procedures for developments if this happens, sharing appropriate details with area authorities and district officials looking into the issue."
