The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.
A brand new six-part series created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."
The previous series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but official word only came this week.
Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most delicate case so far."
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.
However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.
Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."
"Delighted with the news and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."
The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.
Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will hit screens.
The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
