Joseph Parker & Wardley Set for High-Stakes Rumble with Chance at Oleksandr Usyk on the Horizon

Boxing is experiencing a real slump this season, with few major fights and far less compelling bouts than usual. The possibility of a high-stakes and fascinating heavyweight contest between Parker and Fabio Wardley at the London's O₂ Arena brings a measure of relief to the struggling sport. The last man standing will very likely face the world champion Usyk next year. In contrast, the unsuccessful boxer is likely to lament the unavoidable deterioration of their hard-won plaudits.

Threat and Hazard Define This Encounter

Parker is on a hot streak since his last defeat to opponent Joe Joyce three years ago. The New Zealand veteran, who secured a world title in 2016, has been revitalized by his switch of trainers to the inspirational Andy Lee. Wardley, who began in white-collar boxing, who only took up boxing when he was 20 years old, had zero amateur background and has perpetually battled doubts about his comparatively limited skills. But he is also on the verge to a shot at the title.

“This is the most important contest, currently, in the heavyweight division. These two boxers have accepted the challenge when neither fighter had to agree to this match. Joe Parker is the interim champion and they have previously mandated the champion to fight him, but the Ukrainian was injured. Parker is eager to compete regardless.

“Fabio is similarly well-placed and he merely needed to be patient for his chance. He said ‘I refuse.’ He wanted to fight – and versus Parker because it gives him a chance to skip the line.”

Parker, aging 34 soon, said: “It's win or go home. I am not focused on a loss. I honor my adversary and what he has done and his preparation for this fight. But I am on a higher plane and I am planning to demonstrate it on the day of the bout.”

Wardley’s Outlook

Wardley turns 31 in December, and he said: “It's a huge evening for the two of us. It is undoubtedly the largest contest of my boxing journey and the biggest fight of my life. But whenever I face a tougher opponent I elevate my performance. Saturday will be no different. The divide between Parker's status and my perceived standing has been a frequent topic in my boxing life.

“He's a seasoned veteran for a long time, with a lot of fights on his resume. In no way is he an senior boxer but he has been in the game for a long time and had several tough bouts. I've also endured brutal fights and I know they put miles on the clock. He has been in a far greater number of those fights than I have.”

But the suspicion remains that Parker is likely to be too experienced, and too skilled, for Wardley. He should win a grueling encounter with the belief that he is the leading contender for the champion Usyk – currently the top heavyweight globally by a comfortable distance.
