Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he will make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections conclude.
"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," Newsom commented when pressed about giving serious thought to a presidential run following the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."
Newsom's current term as governor concludes in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he noted that any determination is not imminent.
"The future will decide," he added.
He has emerged as a high-profile critic of the current federal leadership, leveraging his digital presence and pushing a ballot measure that would expand the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This action has drawn criticism from critics.
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a weekend appearance on a major news network. Duffy announced a strategy to withhold taxpayer dollars from California and suggested eliminating the authority to provide trucking licenses.
"I plan to withdraw $160m from California," Duffy said, following a recently reported fatal crash in California involving an unauthorized trucker that resulted in loss of life and casualties.
Newsom's office pointed out that the national authorities had approved the individual's authorization multiple times, which enabled him to obtain a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
The transportation secretary had previously indicated he was blocking $40 million from California for ignoring English language requirements for CDL holders.
"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," his administration responded in a recent release countering the secretary's comments. "For now, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: The state's CDL holders had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."
A this month's study found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate believed that Newsom should run for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has risen to an mean of 33.5% from around 30%, while his disapproval has dropped from an typical level of previous highs to 38.4%.
Earlier this year, Newsom stated while on a trip several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for 2028.
He also referenced his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.
"The notion that a person who had modest test scores, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, alone, amazing," he commented. "No one can say? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the American people."
