We are verifying images and video shared this morning that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to check the site of where the images originated relied on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.

Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the footage were captured.

We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
