European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
