New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared his decision to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, despite an extended period of disagreements between the pair of Democrats.
Just last month, the mayor had strongly criticized Cuomo, describing him as a “snake and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Nonetheless, in a new development, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now plans to campaign alongside Cuomo in areas where he maintains significant backing.
“It is crucial to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have experienced gentrification on how vital this race is,” the mayor remarked.
The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been overlooked in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.”
The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the struggle between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has drawn interest internationally and symbolized aspirations for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.
In a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee his conservative opponent stated they would refuse the mayor's support if offered.
Months ago, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later thrown out in exchange for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across New York City.
At an separate media briefing on the same day, Adams answered journalists inquiring into the support announcement by stating, “I’ll be with Andrew later today.”
This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at the famous arena, which took place right after a heated mayoral debate.
