Danish national individual given deferred sentence for posting explicit film clips on the social platform Reddit

A Denmark-based citizen has been convicted of uploading nude segments from copyrighted movies and television shows on the online platform Reddit.

According to a law enforcement report reviewed by BBC News, the unnamed man posted 347 video excerpts of explicit scenes in a Reddit group he managed, which were then watched 4.2 million-plus times.

The country's authorities confirm he has been handed a seven-month suspended sentence for copyright infringement.

Experts explain the defendant was charged under a seldom-invoked clause in Denmark's intellectual property legislation, with the court ruling that by removing the scenes out of their original context, the accused had harmed the performers' "ethical entitlements".

He has additionally been convicted of sharing more than 25 terabytes of copyrighted digital content.

From spring 2022 to May 2023, the man known as "the pseudonym KlammereFyr" on Reddit posted sexually explicit scenes including over 100 actresses.

He shared them in the subreddit he was a administrator of.

Per the Denmark's copyright protection group the Rights Alliance, his subreddit had more than 6,000 subscribers and users were encouraged to ask for clips of particular performers.

In last year, campaigners reported the case to the police on behalf of the affected actors, directors and production companies, which resulted in the subreddit being shut down.

One actress, one of the performers whose explicit scenes were circulated in the community, explained to Danish media at the time she felt there was a distinction between appearing naked in a film and being shown on Reddit.

The performer stated the posts amounted to "abuse".

'An important message'

The man was detained in fall 2024 and admitted culpable to the allegations last month.

In a comment after the verdict, the head of the Rights Alliance the organization's leader said the outcome sent an "important" signal "that violations of artists' rights have consequences".

The verdict is considered unique in the country for its application of the "ethical protections" clause of the Danish Copyright Act, which states an artist's creation cannot be used in a way which infringes upon their reputation.

Intellectual property specialist Dr Alina Trapova told BBC News the case was "unusual" for its emphasis on the harm to the dignity of an performer, rather than to them economically.

The extent to which the case could affect nations abroad is uncertain.

But she added there may be "an increasing number of such cases" in the coming years with the growth of AI, where "the integrity of an individual's work might be tempered with much more easily".
