A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, raising questions about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the end of January rose in the hours before Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A single trader, which became a member recently and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that users put the odds of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However the odds had climbed to over 10% by the end of the day and surged in the morning of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in positions right before the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.

A small number of other traders also made significant sums from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation presented on recently aims to prohibit public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in recent years, with traders able to wager on everything from elections to current affairs.

The industry were examined under the previous administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting industry.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
